Sermorelin · Growth hormone support peptide

Sermorelin: Support your body's own growth hormone rhythm, rather than replacing it.

Sermorelin is a peptide that prompts your pituitary gland to release its own growth hormone, in the natural pulses your body already uses. At Integrated Functional Health it is one optional part of a plan built on sleep, strength training, nutrition and a calmer nervous system.

At a glance

Sermorelin in brief

Sermorelin is a short form of the brain's natural "release growth hormone" signal. It prompts the pituitary to release its own growth hormone in natural pulses, while the body's built in brakes stay in place. Taken at bedtime, it is designed to support the nighttime rhythm your body already uses.

  • What it is: A peptide that signals the pituitary to release your own growth hormone.
  • How it is taken: A small injection under the skin at bedtime, five nights a week.
  • Often explored for: Sleep quality, recovery and body composition.
  • Dose: Set by your provider, who may adjust it over time.
  • Status: Once FDA approved; today compounded, which is not FDA approved.

What it is

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a short version of growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH), the signal your brain uses to tell the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. It is made of the first 29 amino acids of that natural hormone, which is the part that does the signaling.

Sermorelin has a longer medical history than most peptides. It was once FDA approved, for children with growth hormone deficiency, and was later discontinued by its maker for commercial reasons, not because of safety concerns. Today it is prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies. The version offered through IFH is a small injection under the skin, prescribed by an independent licensed provider who decides whether it suits you.

How it works

How Sermorelin works

Your body does not release growth hormone steadily. It comes in pulses, and the largest of them usually happens during deep sleep early in the night. Two signals from the brain set that rhythm: GHRH, which says "release", and somatostatin, which says "stop". Growth hormone then prompts the liver to make IGF-1, which carries many of its effects to muscle, bone and other tissues.

Sermorelin acts like GHRH. It encourages the pituitary to release the growth hormone it makes itself, while the body's own "stop" signal and feedback loops stay in charge. That is the key difference from taking growth hormone directly, which bypasses those controls.

Growth hormone release tends to decline gradually through adulthood. Sermorelin is taken at bedtime so its signal lines up with the body's natural nighttime pulse.

What it may support

What people explore Sermorelin for

  • Sleep quality

Many people explore it for deeper, more restful sleep, when growth hormone naturally peaks.

  • Recovery

May support how you feel and recover between workouts, alongside good sleep and nutrition.

  • Body composition

Researchers are studying its role in lean muscle and body fat, with modest results so far.

  • Your natural rhythm

Works with your pituitary's own pulses rather than replacing the hormone.

  • A broader plan

Works best with strength training, protein at each meal and steady sleep habits.

How it is used

What taking Sermorelin looks like

Your independent licensed provider sets your dose and adjusts it over time. Here is what the routine involves.

  • Form: A small injection under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Rotate the spot each time.
  • How often: Five nights a week, with two nights off.
  • Timing: At bedtime, to match the body's natural nighttime growth hormone release.
  • Dose: Your provider sets the dose, which can differ for men and women, and may adjust it.
  • How long: Often a course of about eight to ten weeks, with check ins as your provider advises.
  • Storage: Follow the storage instructions from your pharmacy.

What the research says

The evidence, plainly

Most of the human research on sermorelin comes from its time as an approved medicine for children with growth hormone deficiency, where it was studied for growth. Research in adults is limited, and much of it is from the 1990s.

Small studies in healthy older adults found that nightly injections of this GHRH fragment raised growth hormone and IGF-1 levels, showing that the pituitary still responds to the signal. Effects on body composition, strength and wellbeing were small, inconsistent, and sometimes differed between men and women. In sleep laboratory studies, the body's own GHRH has been linked with deeper sleep, which is one reason people explore sermorelin for sleep quality.

There are no large, modern trials of sermorelin in adults. The honest summary: a well understood mechanism, a safety record from its years as an approved medicine, and limited evidence for the benefits adults hope for.

Safety

Who it suits, and what to watch for

It may not be right for

  • A known allergy to sermorelin or any ingredient in the preparation
  • A current or past history of cancer, especially breast, prostate or pituitary
  • A pituitary tumor or other pituitary disease
  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Diabetes that is not well controlled; others with diabetes need glucose monitoring
  • Thyroid problems, which sermorelin can bring to light
  • Sleep apnea, which fluid retention may worsen
  • Children and teenagers, who need specialist monitoring
  • Current use of cocaine or methamphetamine

Your provider reviews your full health history and current medications before prescribing.

Possible side effects

  • Redness, swelling or flushing where you inject
  • Headache, usually mild and short lived
  • Dizziness or nausea, which are uncommon
  • Restlessness or trouble sleeping
  • Joint aches or swelling in the hands or feet, which are uncommon
  • Allergic reactions, which are very rare

If a side effect is severe or does not settle, contact your provider. For chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction, call 911.

How it fits your plan

More than a prescription

Your body's growth hormone rhythm is shaped every day by sleep, training, food and stress. Deep sleep is when the largest pulse happens, and a stress response that never switches off works against it. That is why sermorelin is never the plan by itself at IFH. Our longevity work focuses on healthspan, the years you live in good health, and our functional health coaching works on the foundations directly.

Regulate, Integrate, Optimize is the thread. Settling the nervous system helps sleep deepen, and from there we build the habits that support your own hormone rhythm: strength training two to three times a week, protein at every meal, a steady bedtime and less late night alcohol. Lab work at a local Labcorp or Quest location and professional grade supplements are there if you want them, to round out the plan.

Good to know

The details that matter

  • Sermorelin was once FDA approved and was discontinued for commercial reasons. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA approved and has not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality.
  • It is prescribed only after an independent licensed medical provider reviews your health history and decides it is appropriate. Your provider also sets your dose.
  • Your medication is prepared by an independent licensed pharmacy and shipped to your door, in most states.
  • Tell your provider about every medication and supplement you take, especially anything for diabetes or your thyroid.

Questions

Questions about Sermorelin

Is sermorelin the same as growth hormone?

No. Growth hormone injections replace the hormone directly. Sermorelin is a signal that prompts your pituitary to release its own growth hormone, in natural pulses, while the body's own brakes and feedback loops stay in control. That is a different approach, and it depends on a pituitary that still responds.

How is it different from hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy replaces a hormone the body is making less of, such as estrogen or testosterone. Sermorelin does not replace anything; it encourages your body to release its own growth hormone. IFH will soon offer hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for men, and Matt can tell you more at your consultation.

Why is it taken at bedtime?

Your largest natural growth hormone pulse usually comes in the first hours of deep sleep. Taking sermorelin at bedtime lines its signal up with that rhythm. A regular bedtime and a dark, cool room help the same rhythm, which is why sleep habits are part of the plan.

How soon might I notice anything?

Changes, if you notice them, are usually gradual. Some people notice their sleep first; changes in recovery or body composition, where they happen, take longer and depend heavily on training and nutrition. A full course paired with steady habits gives a fairer picture than any single week.
